OpenAI has launched Sora, its text-to-video AI model, as part of its 12-day “ship-mas” product release series. Sora, along with the upgraded Sora Turbo, allows users to create videos from text, animate images, remix videos, and more. Available on Sora.com, it is accessible to ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) and Pro ($200/month) subscribers in the US and most other countries. The Plus plan supports 720p resolution and 5-second videos, while the Pro plan offers 1080p resolution, 20-second videos, and features like watermark-free downloads and simultaneous generations. Non-subscribers can browse community-generated videos but cannot create their own.

Sora includes innovative features such as a storyboards tool for prompt-based video sequences, the ability to convert photos into videos, and a remix tool for refining outputs with new prompts. An explore page showcases community creations, fostering engagement. Videos come with watermarks and C2PA metadata to indicate they are AI-generated. To ensure compliance, OpenAI requires users to agree that uploads will not include explicit, copyrighted, or harmful material, with violations potentially leading to account bans. OpenAI emphasizes ongoing efforts to balance moderation with creative freedom, welcoming user feedback.
